Believe it or not! But the way a chicken coop is constructed has an impact on your hens abilities to lay eggs properly. If their home doesn’t meet all their needs or they experience stress, their eggs are going to suffer. You end up with less or even very brittle ones that shatter at the slightest touch.
The Stress Free Life Of Chickens!
It doesn’t seem that they have much to worry about, but there are certain things you can do to make their lives even more stress free. Being prey animals, one of their major concerns is that of predators. Even though we know they are safe, they don’t necessarily know. Really, to them, we are no better than another predator until they start trusting us.
So, one of the main considerations is that of making sure your hens feel completely safe and comfortable in their home. You want them to view it as a safe haven they can retreat to if they feel endangered.
Clean Fresh Air
Birds are known for their cleanliness. So make sure when constructing your chicken coop that you include plenty of ventilation. Of course you’ll also make sure that they’ll have a place to get out of a breeze. But at the same time the air there should also be continuously circulated.
The Perfect Nest!
Surprisingly, the perfect nest does not have to use a particular material. It could be that the cardboard box that your cereal came in might be the one your hens fall in love with! There are a myriad ways to build one to suit. You might have to do some testing and experimenting to find what material works the best for your flock.
Location Is Everything
Just as in real estate, the location and positioning plays a large role. The right spot will help with keeping the right temperature as well as providing for good ventilation. For the chickens, the location of their nests is important for them to feel comfortable using them.
